We managed to grab Robbe for a few questions last night - read full interview below!
CRLV: Welcome Robbe, first things first, tell us where you grew up, it's music scene and what age you first started mixing and playing shows?
R: I’m from Belgium and I grew up in this small town called Aalter, situated between Ghent and Bruges. To be honest, the music scene in my town is quite sad, people here mainly love commercial music, hardstyle is also very popular. They’re not really up for Electro/Techno unfortunately.
I started mixing when I just became 16 and a couple of months later I had my first show, which immediately was an international one, the show was in Germany, Dresden. Was pretty cool, but also very stressful!
CRLV: Is it hard to build a name on just mixes? What advice would you give smaller DJs just starting to find there feet?
R: It’s definitely very hard to build a name on just mixes. And it’s way harder now than it already was 3 years ago. Just be patient and don’t give up. It’s very important that your tapes are not one of the 100,000 other tapes that are already out there. Do something different, use tracks that nobody else knows. And connect with other dj’s and producers, giving respect means getting respect. But with mixtapes only you won’t get that far though, no matter how good you are. That’s one of the reasons I started producing.
CRLV: You're known for backing some of the best talents around very early on, how do you find them?
R: Soundcloud is the way to go! There are so many talented producers out there that don’t get the recognition they deserve. I just constantly look for new artists on soundcloud. I invest a lot of time into listening to other people’s work, both tracks and mixtapes. I also discover some of the upcoming talents through other artists that I already know. When I listen to tracks from new and unknown talented producers and I believe they’ve got talent, I keep following them and support them as much as I can by sharing their music and by using their tracks in my tapes.
CRLV: Who are the best around right now, in your opinion?
R: There are so many great artists, but here are a few: Pilo, Nom De Strip, Les Tronchiennes, Crumps, Tybo, The Loops of Fury, Henzel & Disco Nova, Peo De Pitte, Clockwork,…
CRLV: If you could open the stage for any artist, who would you pick and why?
R: That would be Boys Noize. It’s because of him I got into electronic music.
CRLV: If you had all the money in the world what line up would you book for a show or festival?
R: -Daft Punk (cliché, I know)
-Boys Noize Live
-Gesaffelstein
-Zedd
-Tommy Trash
-Lucky Date
-Destructo
CRLV: You've mentioned you turned a few mixtape requests down before ours, what do you think about CRLV and what makes it special to you ?
R: I think it’s a great creation. CRLV unites people with a passion for electronic music. It is special to me because this dj collective brings up new talent and supports the upcoming electronic producers. And they need all the support they can get. I believe there’s much potential for this project and it can develop into something huge. CRLV has got some awesome things coming up in the future, no doubt about that!
CRLV: Thanks for your time bro, we are very happy to see you progress and can't wait to hear the first production!
R: It was my pleasure! The first BoЯRoBeats tunes are coming closer
